Cigarette smoking is one of the leading causes of death throughout the world. Both active and passive smoking have acute and chronic effect on hematological parameters. Continuous cigarette smoking adversely affects on Haemoglobin level, RBC count,WBC count, Haematocrit and thus MCH and MCHC. And the mean cell volume also gets elevated. However, effects may be vary between individuals and duration of time that they expose to smoking.

Due to the cigarette smoke the carboxy hemoglobin levels get elevated in blood.And also it is associated with polycythemia. Therefor these people have high Haemoglobin levels and high hematocrict.

Smoking increases the total WBC count in individual’s blood. This is mainly due to the increasement of neutrophil counts. Also they have high level of CD4- positive lymphocytes and thus high total lymphocyte count.

 

When we consider the platelet counts, smokers have high platelet counts than non smokers. But when they stop the smoking, the counts decrease rapidly.The mean platelet volume is also get elevated due to smoking.In addition to these full blood count parameters, there are some other blood counts that may be affected by smoking. They are,

  • Plasma viscocity :increased
  • Haptoglobin concentration : increased
  • Fibrinogen and β- Thromboglobulin concentration: increased
  • VWF level: increased
  • Plasma volume : decreases thus ESR : increased
  • Protein S: decreased

Smoking leads to hypoxic condition in blood and this adversely affects on your body.
