Blood_Tubes

Vacutainer tubes were invented by Joeep Kleiner and Becton Dickinson in 1949.
You may have seen , different colors blood collections tubes ,
Different color top blood collection tubes , may contain specific type anticoagulant and additives , designed to stabilize and preserve the blood specimen prior to analytical testing.
If we use the wrong tube , may make the blood sample unusable for the intended purpose.

Blood Collection Tubes

Purple or lavender color top blood tubes

These tubes contain either K2EDTA or K3EDTA as a anticoaulater .

calcium is an essential component of coagulation , so EDTA prevents clotting by chelating calcium in blood sample .

this anticoagulant, can preserve morphology of blood cells .

so this lavender color top blood tubes use for ,

  • Full blood count
  • Blood picture
  • Hba1c test
  • measure most proteins and
  • DNA and RNA isoloations

Light Blue color top tubes

These tubes contain sodium citrate as a anticoagulant

citrate acts by removing calcium from blood.

But Unlike EDTA, it’s reversible – so calcium can be added back , to study coagulation under controlled conditions.

Citrated plasma is usually used to measure coagulation-relevant factors. Such as

  • PT
  • APTT
  • INR
  • Other blood coagulation time tets

And ESR test …

Light Blue Color_Blood Tube

Green color top tubes

Light green tubes contain – Lithum heparin and

Dark green tubes contain – Sodium heparin as a anticoagulant .

heparin tubes can also can see with a separating gel.

Heparin acts by inhibiting thrombin formation.

Note: if your end game is PCR, you should know that heparin is particularly known to interfere with PCR reactions.

heparin tubes usually use for ,

  • Electrolyte tests   &
  • Kariyotyping

Grey color top tubes

These tubes contain Sodium fluoride is as antiglycolytic agent , so it inhibit glycolytic enzyme enolase …
therefore ensure that no further glucose breakdown occur , within the sample  and potassium oxalate usually use as anticoagulant agent.
so these tubes are used for glucose as well as lactate testing.
How ever , Some companies use orange color for those tubes …

Grey Color Top blood_Tube

Pink color top tubes

These tubes contain EDTA as anticoagulant .

but specially use for Blood banking & Transfusion laboratory pourposes ,

these tubes use for ,

  • Blood Grouping
  • Cross Matching
  • Direct Coombs Test

Red color top tubes

Red color blood Tube

Red color top tubes can be plain tubes or tubes with clot activater.
Red color tubes use for serum preparations. Use for bioChemistry tests …

Gold color top tubes

Gold color top tubes also call as , Serum separation gell tubes …
These tubes contain , 2 agents ,
Silica particles & Serum separation gell
So gell layer will come to between serum & cells , and help to clearly separation serum from RBC .
Use for many biochemistry tests …
