Eosinophils are another type of WBC which help us to protect our body from allergies, parasitic diseases and drug hypersensitivities. Eosinophils are type of granulocyte that develop during hematopoiesis.

eosinophils

Morphology & Function

Eosinophils are little larger than neutrophils and 12 – 17 micro metre in diameter. The cytoplasm is pale blue and it is packed with distinctive spherical orange colour granules. These acidic granules release substances when they attack parasites such as worms. And also they have 2 nuclear lobes.

Normal Range

Usually it accounts for 1 – 4% of total WBCs. It ‘s mean 0.04-0.4X109/L  of blood.

Why & when high Eosinophils count

When eosinophils counts get increased (>0.4X109/L) it is called as eosinophillia. This can be due to allergic conditions, parasitic infections & Certain cancers . Very high eosinophil counts may be seen in eosinophilic leukemia and in idiopathic hypereosinophilic syndrome. And also reactive eosinophillia with high WBC counts can be seen in T cell lymphoma, B cell lymphoma and in acute lymphoblastic leukemia.

Why & when low Eosinophils count

When the eosinophil counts are lower than normal, it is called as eosinophenia. Acute stress , Acute pyogenic infections and Prolonge steroid administration can cause eosinophenia.

Other Facts / Special facts

In Some occasions doctor may ask to perform , Absolute Eosinophilic count test. In this case  we need to measure only the number of eosinophils in blood. Remember , you don’t need to get special preparations for this laboratory test , but you must tell your doctor , if you take any blood thinning medications .

( Ex;- warfarin )
